The Do’s and Don’ts of Cleaning Your Carpeting

carpeting in roomCarpets are a versatile flooring option for your home. They can easily add beautiful design details to any room. In cold winter months, they can help keep your feet warm with an added layer of insulation to your floors.

Wall-to-wall carpeting helps to create sound-proofing for areas like your bedrooms, and office space, too.

How do you maintain and keep your carpets clean, especially in high-traffic areas? Here are some do’s and don’ts of cleaning your carpeting.

Vacuum Your Carpets Often

To keep your carpets looking their best, it’s important to clean them often. This means cleaning them before they actually appear dirty. Dust, dirt, and debris can be hidden deep within the fibers of the carpet where you can’t see them.

High traffic areas of your home, such as entryways, living rooms, and playrooms, may need to be vacuumed on a daily basis. Other areas, such as bedrooms, may only need to be vacuumed once a week or so.

To ensure you are thoroughly cleaning your floors, make sure your vacuum is working properly. Before you turn the vacuum on, make sure the vacuum bag or dirt container is empty, and that the filter is clean.

Deep Cleaning Your Carpets

A thorough deep cleaning of your carpet can get out the dirt that regular vacuuming can’t. A deep cleaning Is needed approximately once a year, or perhaps more if the carpet is in a high-traffic area, and can help your carpeting maintain its look and quality longer.

Before using any type of chemical cleaners, test your carpet for colorfastness. If the material is colorfast, it won’t bleed or fade. This is what you are looking for in the test spot before using the cleaner on the rest of the carpeting.

For small spills, it’s best to try using just water to clean the spot before using a chemical cleaner. According to This Old House, the best way to get a spot out is to blot the area of the spill with a damp cloth. Don’t scrub or rub at the area, as you could damage the carpet fibers or force the spilled liquid farther down into the carpet.

Carpet cleaners are the most effective method to deep clean your carpets. There are two types of carpet cleaners, the water extraction method and the dry extraction method. The water extraction method is the most common.

For the water extraction method, the carpet cleaner injects hot water and a cleaning solution into your carpet, loosening dirt and grime. At the same time, it’s also extracting the water and dirt back out of the carpeting with a vacuum suction.

It’s important not to over-wet your carpeting. The water may seep into the backing or underlayment of the carpet. If this doesn’t dry properly, it can cause mold and mildew. The water extraction method is also called steam cleaning, and the machine used is also known as a steam cleaner.

The dry extraction method is also known as the Very Low Moisture (VLM) system. For the dry extraction method, you spread an absorbent cleaning compound over your carpeting and let that stand the recommended time. Then, you thoroughly vacuum your carpeting, taking up the cleaning compound with any dirt and grime in the carpet.

Before doing either a wet or a dry cleaning, it’s best to remove as much of the furniture from the room as possible. Then give the carpet a good vacuuming. Pretreat any stains and high-traffic areas with a recommended cleaner. This will help to ensure you get a good, deep clean for your carpets

According to the Huffington Post, between cleanings, you can use baking soda as a quick, non-chemical deodorizer. Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet area and let this sit for a time. The longer it sits, the more odors it can absorb. Then just vacuum the baking soda up with any odors the carpeting may have had along with it.

Deep cleaning your carpets can be tedious work. If you don’t own a carpet cleaner, there is the expense of renting the cleaner and buying the cleaning chemicals to use with it.

Brandon Brown

I grew up in our families flooring business in Midvale with my parents and grandfather. Over the years I had the opportunity to estimate, sell and install all types of flooring both residential and commercial with my grandfather, father, brothers, cousins and uncles (many of which are still in the business). My favorite part of the business is meeting new people every day and enjoying the diversity of each of the projects we tackle. I guess you could say, "it is in my blood."
